Christmas & New Year opening hours – we are here to help

7th December 2020

We will continue to provide care for your pets during the COVID-19 pandemic and over the Christmas and New Year holiday period.

Please note, our opening hours may be subject to change over the holiday. christmas-opening-times2020-interior (002)

If you are concerned about the health or welfare of your pet, please call us for an appointment or emergency services. Our friendly reception team will advise you of when and where you can be seen and what you need to do.

In the case of an emergency outside of our opening hours, please contact our out of hours emergency service. Please note: In order to safely provide 24-hour emergency care for your pets at this time, the way you access emergency healthcare for your pet may not always be at your usual branch.

To help us with our new ways of working and to keep us all safe, please only attend at the practice if you have called us first and have a pre-booked appointment. Thank you.

We wish you all a safe and very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

We are here to help if you need us

Throughout the holidays, our team is here to help with telephone consultations with the vet, pre-booked appointments in practice, or to order and pick up repeat medicines.

The health and safety of our clients and colleagues alongside the welfare of the animals in our care remain our main priority at this time. Due to our new ways of working to keep us all safe, things are taking a little longer than usual reducing the number of pets we can see in practice every day.   Please bear with us. We are constantly reviewing our COVID-19 risk assessment in line with Government guidelines and guidance from our governing body – the RCVS – and will keep you updated of any changes.

We politely ask that you do not attend the practice unless you have called us first and booked an appointment. Thank you.

Flea and worm treatment and repeat medication

If you are due your next supply of flea and wormer treatment or repeat medication you can also request this via the website repeat prescription form.

Prior to dispensing your treatment, a member of our team will call you to take payment where applicable and arrange safe collection.

Update on vaccinations and routine procedures during the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic

Your pet’s vaccination or routine procedure may have been postponed temporarily to minimise human travel and inter-person contact to help keep us all safe.

We are working hard to ensure all vaccinations due and routine procedures such as neutering are booked in, whilst maintaining stringent biosecurity protocols.

Your veterinary team is here and able to support you with telephone consultations and pre-booked appointments. Please contact us if you have any specific questions or pet health concerns.

SignVideo service for deaf cleints

3rd February 2020

We are delighted to announce a new SignVideo service for our deaf clients who use British Sign Language (BSL).

The free SignVideo service for deaf clients who use British Sign Language (BSL) works using video calls connected to fully qualified BSL interpreters and enables deaf clients to communicate through SignVideo either by calling the practice from home or when they attend the practice with their pet, for consultations, to pick up food, medication or for advice etc.

A client will need their own smartphone, computer or device with video and sound and their own data to use the service. The service is accessed by clicking on the SignVideo practice link from the practice contact us page on the website or using the SignVideo app.

You don’t need to go to the Healthy Pet Club practice finder referred to in the video if you are already viewing this video from our practice website, you can access the Sign Video link from the Contact us Page on our website.

More information

To find out more about this service including the equipment you need, and to view the terms, click on the Deaf BSL Service page on our website.

The new service is available from 8am – 6pm Monday to Friday, excluding Bank Holidays. Please note that this service may not cover all our opening hours, which you can check on our website.

To contact us now, using the new SignVideo service, click on the direct practice SignVideo link on our Contact Us page on the website.

The Cinnamon Trust is our charity for 2020

10th January 2020

The Cinnamon TrustEderly woman and cat is our charity of choice for 2020.

The charity provides support and peace of mind for elderly, hospitalised and terminally ill pet owners and their pets. The Trust’s primary objective is to respect and preserve the treasured relationship between owners and their pets.

What does The Cinnamon Trust do?

The Trust operates a national network of over 15,000 community service volunteers providing practical help when any aspect of day to day care poses a problem – for example, walking the dog for a housebound owner.

There is a national fostering service for pets whose owners face a spell in hospital – volunteers take pets into their own homes and care for them until owner and pet can be reunited.

The Trust also provides long term care for pets whose owners have died or moved to residential accommodation which will not accept pets.

When a pet is in the Trust’s care because the owner is in care, where possible the owner is kept in touch with visits or regular photos and letters.

How we can help The Cinnamon Trust?

In addition to the financial support that we can give through fundraising throughout the year, we all have the opportunity to make a positive difference for Cinnamon Trust by raising awareness of the work that they do throughout the UK.

The Trust is always on the lookout for volunteers who can help with dog walking or offering short term foster care for pets. Their website includes a map indicating the areas where they have the most urgent need for volunteer support. This is updated weekly.

The more volunteers they have the more people and pets they can help.

If you want to help, view the real time map and download a volunteer registration form.

The Cinnamon Trust regularly post heart-warming news and valuable information on their Facebook page, be sure to give them a like to stay updated.

They are also happy to accept personal donations via their Facebook page as Facebook does not not charge a fee for this service.

StreetVet is our chosen charity for 2019

28th January 2019

Colleagues across our practices have voted to support StreetVet, a non-profit organisation providing free and accessible veterinary care for homeless owners and their pets.

Run by volunteer vets and veterinary nurses, StreetVet has grown extensively since it started in 2016, set up by just two vets working on the streets of London to help homeless pets. The charity has grown to have over 250 volunteers across nine cities in London, Bristol, Brighton, Cambridge, Cheltenham, Cornwall, Plymouth, Birmingham and Southampton.

They depend entirely on donations and can perform most procedures you would come across in any normal veterinary practice. Any funds raised will go towards medicines, microchips, food and other necessities for any pets in their care. With the support of local veterinary practices in their outreach cities StreetVet can also provide out of hours care, hospital treatment and surgery where needed.

And it’s not only the pets they try to help, where possible StreetVet will assist owners in any way they can, whether it’s with hostel facilities, their own medical treatment or just a listening ear.

Pets have been shown to provide enormous benefits to their owners through companionship, affection, security and warmth. They can also improve mental health and feeling of wellbeing, whilst decreasing drug dependency and suicidal thoughts. Whilst on the streets homeless dogs can provide assistance to their owners and are active, stimulated, cared for and loved unconditionally.

StreetVet would not be possible without the support of local veterinary practices and their army of volunteers, as well as the generosity of the general public who help by purchasing items from their Amazon gift list, fundraising, supporting their social media campaigns and offering words of encouragement.

If you would like to find out more about StreetVet or would like to get involved please see their website or follow them on Facebook or Twitter.

New equine Facebook page

7th January 2019

At Oaklands we have a new equine Facebook page “@OaklandsEquineHospital” where we are excited to have a platform purely for equine news, information and conversation.

The original Oaklands Veterinary Centre Facebook page “@oakvets” will now concentrate on updates, information and news from the small animal team.

You can therefore now choose to follow either one or both pages, meaning you will only receive posts that should interest you.

Please take a look!
