Your appointment
Please arrive 10 minutes prior to your appointment time to allow our reception staff to book your horse in.
If you are unable to keep your appointment for any reason please let us know as soon as possible.
We may advise you to fast your horse before your appointment, otherwise feed as normal.
If your horse is on prescribed medication, please continue this as normal unless otherwise advised.
If you have any questions, or your horse has special circumstances, please consult us or your vet.
Admission
On arrival please come to reception. The vet will be informed of your arrival and a nurse or nursing assistant will be available to assist with unloading and weighing your horse if required.
If your horse is required to remain in the clinic for one night or more they will benefit from the new barn accommodation, deep shavings beds, daily grooming and continuity of diet according to your instructions.
Confirmation of vaccine status will be required. All horses being admitted to the hospital must be accompanied with their passport.
Discharge
You will be notified when your horse is ready to be discharged, and a suitable time will be arranged. Discharge instructions will be provided in writing and explained to you in person.
Inpatient care
Oaklands Equine Hospital is staffed 24-hours per day, seven days per week, and so there is never a time when your horse is not being cared for.
Overnight care is provided by members of the Oaklands team, specifically a specialist surgeon, a housevet and an equine nurse or nursing assistant. An overnight plan is tailored for every horse individually including how often it must be checked, fed and watered and when treatments must be given. Hour-by-hour or even continuous monitoring is provided when necessary.
Visiting inpatients
We understand that it is important for owners that they can visit their horse in the clinic. During the week we welcome visits from all owners between 9am and 6.30pm. At the weekend visiting hours are 4pm to 5pm Saturday and Sunday. Please call the clinic to advise us of when you would like to visit.
